  4.     Through all the speculation about his alleged drug abuse,
  5. Washington Mayor Marion Barry had retained the loyalty of many
  6. citizens. The lodging last week of an indictment charging him
  7. with three counts of perjury and five counts of possessing
  8. cocaine dealt a severe blow to his support. Already a committee
  9. has been formed to draft the city's congressional delegate,
  10. Walter Fauntroy, as a candidate for mayor. Barry, who is
  11. undergoing treatment for alcoholism in Florida, blasted the
  12. indictment as a "political lynching." Some of his advisers
  13. suggest that his motive for staying in office is to offer to
  14. resign as a bargaining chip in negotiations for a lighter
  15. sentence. If convicted, he could be fined $1.25 million and
  16. sentenced to 20 years in prison.
